A YouTube star just solved a mystery that was over two decades old when he found the vehicle of two Tennessee teenagers who disappeared way back in 2000. Jeremy Beau Sides is a YouTuber whose channel is known as “Exploring With Nug.” He is known for scuba diving in rivers and lakes in an attempt to solve missing person cases and “help bring closures to families in need.”
People Magazine reported that Sides recently zeroed in on the case of Erin Foster, 18, and Jeremy Bechtel, 17, who vanished without a trace on April 3, 2000. They vanished after leaving Foster’s home, and neither of them have ever been seen since.
That all changed last month, when Sides posted a video titled “COLD CASE: Searching Lake For Two Teenagers That Vanished 20 Years Ago!” In this video, he managed to find the black 1998 Pontiac Grand Dam that the teenagers disappeared in.
“I’m lost for words,” Sides said as the vehicle was being extracted from the water. “I’m so glad I could find them. I’m so sad that that’s where they ended up. I can’t believe it’s been over 20 years that they’ve been sitting there waiting for someone to find them.”
“It’s a weird mix of emotions, I can’t even explain it,” he added. “But this isn’t about me, this is about getting them home and we’re gonna do that today.”
Police said that human remains were found in the vehicle, and that they will be identified using genetic DNA testing and dental records.
“We’re not sure yet that we have the correct teenagers, but we believe it is,” said Sheriff Steve Page with the White County Sheriff’s Office.
Preliminary reports indicate that the teenagers went into the water by accident.
“All the windows are up,” Sides said. “Looks like they went around the corner and lost control and went off into the river.”
Sheriff Page said that divers had searched the water before, but had missed the car.
“They were probably less than an eighth of a mile from where the car was found. They just never got anywhere around the car,” he explained, adding that the town has put up guardrails around the river in the years since 2000.
