According to reports, even brand CGI mascots can’t escape getting a bit of the woke flavor that seems to have permeated most aspects of modern culture, as Mars Inc. recently announced that their anthropomorphic M&M’s candy characters are getting a makeover in an effort to make people feel like “they belong and society is inclusive.”
There’s an old adage that goes along the lines of “the truth is stranger than fiction,” and the reality that a candy company is redesigning their anthropomorphized candy characters in an effort to adhere to their “global commitment to creating a world where everyone feels they belong and society is inclusive” seems to fit the sentiments of said adage.
On January 20th, Mars Inc. proclaimed that their M&M’s characters used throughout all their marketing will now have “more nuanced personalities to underscore the importance of self-expression and power of community through storytelling” while getting a slight makeover to how some are physically depicted.
Moving forward, these M&M’s characters will ditch their bold white or flesh-toned arms and legs in exchange with colors that match their candy-coated shells, and the two “female” characters (which seems odd noting since they’re anatomically-devoid candies) are having their shoes altered.
More specifically, the green M&M is ditching her boots in exchange for some “cool, laid-back sneakers to reflect her effortless confidence” whereas the brown M&M’s high heels are being traded in for some smaller pumps.
On top of all this, there will be some personality changes to the band of M&M’s shown in commercials, with Mars Inc. saying that the red one will be nicer to all the other candies and the orange one will “acknowledge his anxiety” and “embrace his true self, worries and all.”
Keep in mind, this is all in the name of fostering belonging and inclusivity – because everyone knows that ordinary people derive a true sense of belonging and self-worth based upon how computer-animated characters featured in advertisements are depicted.
Not even a single month into 2022 and this is what it has come to – delivering a woke makeover to candy mascots in an effort to make everyone feel better on the inside…because these are the important issues impacting the greater populace today.
